About the Show
Mary Shelley famously wrote Frankenstein in reaction to Milton’s Paradise Lost: grappling with her identity as a woman, daughter, mother, and subject of her male-dominated literary culture. This radio hour aims to uplift femme and queer voices in music not just through spotlighting artists and the topics that are important to them, but through understanding them in context and juxtaposition of their mainstream, and often male counterparts. While this series uses gender as a lens to ask questions and dig deeper, it is by no means an essentializing factor that necessitates an inherent difference between the art made by men and non-men. Instead, this series will question the divisions and biases we consciously and unconciously create, are labels like “sad girl indie” and “male manipulator” harmful? Tune in and find out!
