About the Show
My show will focus on the best of modern electronic music with a strong emphasis on techno. I will explore the current state of ghetto, trance, acid, breakbeat, and industrial techno—while highlighting how modern-day influences (politics, technology, and social movements) evolve each sub-genre. To do so, I plan to contextualize the music that I play within the historical setting in which each piece exists. Additionally, I deem it essential to give a framework for each genre’s sound, ethos, and how its aesthetic traits are fundamental to itself. I’ll accomplish this by both a spoken analysis/historical introduction, as well as by playing historically relevant music of the given genre. Furthermore, I wish to probe the regional scenes that influence each category—specifically how Berlin, Detroit, London, and The Netherlands have, and continue to evolve, works in each genre. By analyzing the cultural, social, and socioeconomic aspects of a given city (as well as its art scene and political movements), I hope to illuminate how they have shaped/shape a particular genre. Finally, I’ll aim to investigate non-electronic cross-genre influences and their resultant effects on techno sub-genres (namely how jazz, punk, classical, and funk have contributed to techno’s evolution—with a specific emphasis on Jazz and Detroit techno).
