Midwave Radio was created in March 2020. As COVID-19 struck and our peers scattered around the world, we wanted to know what everyone was reading, watching, listening to and learning. Not only did we miss the sweat and grit from studying in libraries to brushing shoulders with a stranger at Bar Night, but we also missed news. All kinds of news. Literally any news at all.
And so Midwave was born, a pandemic baby. Our vision of Midwave is an inclusive, creative, and informative hub for college students and the wider UChicago community. Our programme includes news – from campus to Hyde Park to the world beyond – interviews, talkshows, and music across all eras and genres.
We broadcast student voices. Their words and playlists provide in sound close-ups of the thoughts and feelings rippling through the community today. Our DJs, hosts, and producers have autonomy in what they broadcast and in selecting the music and conversations that are important to them. We hope that Midwave will be a space for free and imaginative self-expression as well as an audio record of these unique times through the lense of youth culture.
Now, years later, Midwave has blossomed into a thriving and vibrant community, full of DJs and general music appreciators alike. We continue to serve as a vehicle for UChicago students to share their love for groovy tunes, and we are now also proud to be the home of the music events held on campus. Whether it’s our multitude of basement shows, our annual Arts and Culture Festival, our learn-to-DJ lessons, or any of the other wonderful opportunities we provide students throughout the year, we’re glad to be expanding our reach from the airwaves to the ground.
So check out our Instagram, send us an email, sprint at us screaming on the street in the middle of the night, or shoot an arrow at us with a note attached with any questions, comments, or insults you may have, and join this budding community of disk jockeys and sick hotties.
With love,
Your Presidents,
Eli Kanner and Finn Galarneau
